Frequently Asked Questions

A few things that come up often about Asslema.

About the app

What is Asslema?

Asslema is a small mobile app for learning Tunisian Arabic vocabulary. You get a curated list of useful words and phrases, native-recorded audio so you can hear how each one actually sounds, and a short multiple-choice quiz to help the words stick.

“Asslema” (عسلامة) is the everyday Tunisian greeting — roughly “hi” or “hello.”

How much does it cost?

Asslema is free. There are no ads, no in-app purchases, and no subscription.

Which devices does it run on?

Asslema is available on Android (via Google Play) and iOS (via the App Store). Direct links are on the home page.

Do I need an account?

No. Asslema works without sign-up, login, email, or password. Your progress is saved locally on your device.

Does it work offline?

Mostly. The vocabulary list, translations, and quiz are bundled with the app and work offline. Audio recordings are streamed from our server the first time you tap play, so playing a brand-new word requires a connection.

Languages & content

Which languages does the app support?

The app shows translations into English, French, and German, alongside the Tunisian Arabic word.

Audio is currently only available for Tunisian, since that is the language you are learning. We may add spoken translations in the other languages later.

Is this Modern Standard Arabic?

No. Asslema teaches Tunisian Arabic (Tounsi, Derja) — the everyday spoken language of Tunisia. It is related to Modern Standard Arabic but uses different vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar in many places. If you want to chat with people in Tunisia, this is the variant you want.

Who recorded the audio?

The clips are recorded by native Tunisian speakers, so you hear the word the way it’s actually pronounced in conversation rather than a textbook reading.

Are the translations exact?

We aim to give the most natural everyday equivalent, not a literal word-for-word translation. Some Tunisian expressions don’t map cleanly to a single English, French, or German word, and regional variants exist within Tunisia itself. Treat translations as a starting point, and always cross-check before relying on them in a situation where accuracy really matters.

Using the app

I just added the app and the play buttons are greyed out — what’s wrong?

The app needs to fetch the list of available recordings from our server the first time it runs. Make sure the device has an internet connection and reopen the app. Once the list is downloaded, it’s cached locally and the buttons should light up.

I heard there are new words but I don’t see them yet.

The app refreshes its list of available recordings about once a day to keep things light. If you just heard about a new addition, it can take up to 24 hours to show up. Clearing the app’s storage from your device settings will force a fresh fetch on next launch.

Can I suggest a word, fix a translation, or report a bug?

Yes please — feedback is the main way the word list grows. Drop us a note at info@getasslema.com with the word or phrase, the language, and any context you think is useful (e.g. how you’d use it in a sentence).

Privacy & terms

What data does the app collect about me?

As little as possible. Asslema has no account, no advertising, and no third-party analytics. Your preferences and quiz progress stay on your device. When you play a recording, the app talks to our server to fetch the audio, using a random identifier that is not linked to your real identity.

The full details are in the Privacy Policy.

Can I reuse the audio or vocabulary somewhere else?

The recordings, the curated word list, and the “Asslema” name belong to the project and are licensed to you for personal learning inside the app only. Please don’t scrape the audio or repackage the content into another product. See the Terms & Conditions for the legal version.

The project

Who is behind Asslema?

Asslema is a small side project, built and maintained by a tiny team on personal time, with the help of native speakers for the recordings. It’s not backed by a company or a school.

How can I support the project?

The most useful things you can do are free: use the app, tell a friend, leave a review on the store you downloaded it from, and send us corrections or word suggestions when you spot something. That feedback directly shapes what gets added next.
